| Journalist and newspaper magnate, one of the pioneers of mass circulation journalism, born near Dublin, Ireland. Brought up in London, he became editor of Youth, and with his brother, Harold, founded Comic Cuts (1890), the basis for the Amalgamated Press. In 1894 he absorbed the London Evening News, published a number of Sunday magazine papers, and in 1896 revolutionized Fleet Street with his Daily Mail, introducing popular journalism to the UK. In 1908, he became proprietor of The Times. A baronet in 1904, he was created baron in 1906 and viscount in 1917. |
