| Physicist, born in Tonbridge, Kent, SE England, UK. He was professor of physics at Bristol (1948–63), and director of the H H Wills Physics Laboratory, Bristol from 1964. He is best known for his work on the photography of nuclear processes and the discovery of pions, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1950. |
