| biography:
| Painter, born in Florence, NC Italy. He was a pupil of Andrea del Sarto and a close friend of Vasari. Around 1530 he entered the service of Cardinal Giovanni Salviati, whose name he adopted. He travelled and worked extensively in Rome, Venice, and Florence. His best frescoes include those in the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence (1544–8), and in the Palazzo Farnese, Rome (1555). One of the major Italian Mannerist painters, his work is characterized by strong colour, complex figure arrangements, and spatial ambiguity. |
