| Tennis player, born in Barellan, New South Wales, SE Australia, of Aboriginal descent. A popular and relaxed player, she won the Wimbledon singles championship in 1971, and made a comeback to win it again in 1981. She won the Australian Open four times, and many other championships during her career, including the Italian Open and the South African Open. In 1988 she was elected to the International Tennis Hall of Fame. |
