| Chemist and mathematician, born in Oslo (formerly Christiania), Norway. He studied at Oslo and later became professor of applied mathematics there. With his brother-in-law, Peter Waage (1833–1900), he formulated the chemical law of mass action (1864) governing the speed of reaction and the relative concentrations of the reactants. |
