| Athlete, born in Mackay, Queensland, NE Australia. At age 17 she won her first gold medal at the 1990 Commonwealth Games as a member of the 4 x 100 m women's relay team, and was named Young Australian of the Year. She won gold again at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in the 200 m and 400 m races, becoming the first athlete in Commonwealth history to achieve such a feat. Her carrying of both the Aboriginal and Australian flags on her lap of honour endeared her to the public. In 1997 she won the world 400 m title, and was again named Australian of the Year, 1998. She was chosen to light the Olympic torch in Sydney in 2000, and went on to win gold in the 400 m final. |
