| Writer and feminist, born near Melrose, Scottish Borders, SE Scotland, UK. She arrived in Adelaide in 1839 with her parents, and later worked as a governess. Clare Morrison (1854) was the first novel of Australian life written by a woman, and she followed it with four more novels. Her early preoccupation with social problems, especially of the destitute and the young, led her more into the public arena, and she made lecture tours in Britain and the USA. In 1897 she became Australia's first woman political candidate. |
