| English champion ballroom dancer, born in Norwich, Norfolk, E England, UK. In 1911 he married Irene Foote (1893–1969), born in New Rochelle, New York, USA. They became the leading exhibition ballroom dancers and teachers of the period. They developed and popularized new styles of social dancing such as the One-step, the Maxixe, the Turkey-trot, the Castle Walk, and the Hesitation Waltz. She retired from dancing after his death as an airman in the Royal Flying Corps. Irene Castle wrote My Memories of Vernon Castle (1918) and collaborated with Bob and Wanda Duncan on Castles in the Air (1958). |
