| Spanish officer, born in Robles, Portugal, who became lord of Billy and Malapert on his marriage to the lady of these estates. In 1568 he became lieutenant-stadtholder of Friesland, Groningen, and Drenthe, promoted their prosperity, and restored the dykes in 1570 after the All Saints Day Flood. He fought on the Spanish side at the siege of Haarlem in 1573 and was briefly prisoner in 1576 when his troops mutinied in Groningen. He was appointed governor of Limburg, served in Parma's army, and was killed at the siege of Antwerp when the bridge was blown up. |
