| biography:
| Historian and educator, born in New Canton, Virginia, USA. Lacking formal schooling until age 17, he studied at Harvard, and devoted his life to promoting black education. He founded the Journal of Negro History (1916), the African-American-owned Associated Publishers Press (1921), and the popular Negro History Bulletin (1937). A prolific author of popular and scholarly books, he created widespread public interest in African-American history, laying the groundwork for the later development of African-American studies. |
