| biography:
| Alto saxophonist and composer, born in New York City, USA. Although also a trumpeter and clarinettist, it was the warm tone of the alto saxophone that set the swing era style. He was among the outstanding early writers of big band arrangements, composing for the Fletcher Henderson and Benny Goodman orchestras, among others. He led big bands of his own, though none gained particular recognition. A spell in London in 1936 as musical director of the Henry Hall Orchestra had significant influence on the development of British jazz. He was composer-in-residence to the first Glasgow Jazz Festival in 1987. |
