| Dancer and choreographer, born in California, USA. She studied at San Francisco Ballet School and with Alwin Nikolais, and was invited to create a piece for the Paris Opéra Ballet in 1973. Her solo was so well-received that a special post, Danseuse étoile choreographique, was invented for her. Her choreography, which emphasizes a spiritual and mystical expression, has become a major influence on modern dance. From 1980 she directed her own troupe at Venice's Teatro Fenice, but later returned to Paris. In 1993 she became director of the Cullberg Ballet of Sweden. |
