| biography:
| Austrian field-marshal, born in Wolfenbuttel, NC Germany. Field-marshal in 1747, he joined the Dutch army in 1750, became acting captain-general (1751) and guardian of Prince William V of Orange (1759). He got on well with the Amsterdam regents and Willem Bentinck, which made him very influential; he used this to advantage in William V's interest when he came of age. He supported William in the fourth Dutch War against England, and was blamed for the Dutch defeats. He lost popularity and left the Netherlands in 1784. |
