| King of Romania (1930–40), born in Sinaia, C Romania. He renounced his right of succession (1925) as a result of a love affair (he divorced his second wife, Princess Helen of Greece (1928), mother of his son Michael, to live with Elena (Magda) Lupescu) and went into exile in Paris. He returned through a coup in 1930, proclaiming a dictatorship in 1938. He was forced to abdicate in 1940 in favour of his son and went into exile in Portugal where he later married Lupescu (1947). In 2003, fifty years after his death, his remains were brought back to Romania for reburial with full national honours. |
