biography: Poet, born in Milan, Lombardy, N Italy. The son of an Austrian government official, he embraced Napoleon's reforms and worked in the Cisalpine Republic's treasury department. His fame rests on his production in Milanese dialect; it includes an anticlerical satire Ona vision (1812) and, notably, his realistic descriptions of daily life and the misfortunes that befall ordinary people in I desgrazi de Giovannin Bongee (1812), La Ninetta del Verzee (1814), and El lament del Marchionn di gamb avert (1816).
