| biography:
| Italian admiral, born in Vercelli, Piedmont, N Italy. He led a naval division at the siege of Ancona in 1860 and was First Lord of the Admiralty in 1862. He was commander-in chief of the navy during the 3rd Italian Independence War when the Italian fleet was soundly defeated at Lissa (1866), and was tried and dismissed for ineptitude. |
