| biography:
| Architect, born in Bissone, N Italy. He started as assistant to his uncle, Domenico Fontana, and became the leading exponent of the early Baroque in Rome, producing bold and vigorous innovative designs. In 1603 he was appointed architect to St Peter's, where he lengthened the nave and added a massive facade (1606–12). Other notable works include S Susanna (1597–1603), and the revolutionary Palazzo Barberini, Rome (1628–38), completed by Borromini and Bernini. |
