| biography:
| Duke of Savoia, born in Carignano, Piedmont, NW Italy. The son of Amadeus IX, he succeeded his brother Filiberto I in 1482 and was under the guardianship of Louis IX of France. He strove unsuccessfully to assert his rule over the marquisate of Saluzzo and tried to protect his domain from French interference. He married Bianca, the daughter of Guglielmo Paleologo, who inherited Monferrato. |
