| King of Sardinia, born in Turin, Piedmont, NW Italy. He succeeded his brother Vittorio Emanuele I, who had abdicated following the liberal risings of 1821. Carlo Alberto, regent for the absent Carlo Felice, granted the constitution, but it was retracted by Carlo Felice who asked the Austrians for help in suppressing the insurrection. His rule was characterized by rigid absolutism and total opposition to liberalism. |
