| biography:
| Duke of Savoia, born in Rivoli, Piedmont, NW Italy. He succeeded his father, Emanuele Filiberto, as Duke of Savoia in 1580 and married Caterina, daughter of Philip II of Spain, in 1585. To extend his territories he formed alliances with the empire, France and Spain. The Peace of Lyon (1601) gave him the marquisate of Saluzzo, that he had previously occupied, but he had to give other territories to France. He signed the Treaty of Bruzolo (1510) with Henry IV of France, but refuted it after the king's death. Defeated by the French at Susa (1629), he died leaving his country in a situation of decay. |
