| biography:
| King of Sardinia, born in Turin, NW Italy. In 1730 he became king following the abdication of his father Vittorio Amedeo II. He concluded a number of alliances to widen his domain, firstly joining France and Spain against Austria, and was rewarded with Novara and Tortona by the Peace of Vienna (1738). During the Austrian War of Succession (1740–8), he supported Austria against France and Spain, and obtained Vigevano and other territories. He promoted industrial and commercial development and founded universities at Cagliari and Sassari. |
