| Dancer, choreographer, and teacher, born in Naples, SW Italy. He danced in France, Italy, London, and Russia, and became director of the Dance Academy at La Scala in Milan in 1837. He was the author of noted treatises on the codification of ballet technique (1820, 1840, 1857), and is regarded as the most important ballet teacher of the 19th-c. |
