| biography:
| Civil engineer, born in Asti, NW Italy. He studied at the Polytechnic in Turin and worked as a railway engineer in N Italy. He is noted for the introduction of strain energy methods of structural analysis in his two theorems of 1873 and 1875, the second of which also states the principle of least work. These theorems represented a great advance on the methods of classical theory of structures, especially in their application to statically indeterminate systems. |
