| King of Sardinia, born in Turin, Piedmont, NW Italy. The son of Carlo Emanuele of Savoy, Prince of Carignano, he became temporary regent after Vittorio Emanuele I abdicated during the 1821 risings. He granted the Constitution, but when Carlo Felice took over as king he withdrew it; Carlo Alberto was sent to Tuscany in punishment, and undertook not to change Piedmont's absolute regime if he became king. As king (1831) he suppressed liberal movements and protected the absolute power of the king, while reorganizing and strengthening the state's structures. After 1841 he pursued an anti-Austrian policy and moved closer to the liberals. He granted the Statute in 1848, and after the Five Days Milan revolt he declared war on Austria. Defeated at Custoza, he signed the Salasco armistice in August 1848. He resumed the war. but was defeated again at Novara (1849) and abdicated in favour of his son, Vittorio Emanuele II. |
