| Historical and animal painter, born in Bordeaux, SW France, the son of Claude Vernet. He was commissioned by Napoleon to paint battle scenes such as ‘Marengo’ (1804) and ‘Austerlitz’(1804) (now at Versailles), and by Louis XVIII for sporting scenes such as the ‘The Race’ (Louvre). |
