| King of Sweden since 1973, born in Stockholm, Sweden, the grandson of King Gustav VI. His father died in an air accident (1947), and he became crown prince from his grandfather's accession (1950). A new constitution restricting monarchical powers was approved by the Swedish parliament just before his accession. In 1976 he married Silvia Sommerlath, the daughter of a West German businessman. They have three children: Victoria (1977– ), Carl Philip (1979– ), and Madeleine (1982– ). He is a keen all-round sportsman, proficient in yachting, skiing, and shooting. |
