| biography:
| Archaeologist, born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. He studied at the University of Minnesota (1907 BA) and Yale (1920 PhD), then taught at the University of Cincinnati (1927–57), emeritus (1957–71). He became director of the American School of Classical Studies during the difficult years of 1948–9. His major excavations included Troy and Acrocorinth, but he is best known for his discovery (1939) of the Palace of Nestor at Pylos, in the Peloponnese, with its many Linear B tablets. His Troy and the Trojans (1963), although now dated, remains a good introduction to the subject. He is buried in Athens. |
