| Geographer, born in Quedlinburg, C Germany. He became professor of geography at Berlin (1829), and director of studies of the Military School. He laid the foundations of modern scientific geography, his most important work, Die Erdkunde (1817, Earth Science), stressing the relation between people and their natural environment. |
