| German colonial politician, born in Neuhaus/Elbe, Germany. He founded the Gesellschaft für deutsche Kolonisation (1884) and the Allgemeiner Deutscher Verband (1891). He also founded Deutsch-Ostafrika (1884) which was taken over by the Reich in 1891. His claims to part of Uganda were invalidated by the Helgoland-Sansibar-Vertrag with Great Britain. Due to his inhuman treatment of the African population he was recalled from his post as Reichskommissar for E Africa in 1893. |
