| Geographer, born in Warrenton, Missouri, USA. He studied at Northwestern and Chicago universities, and became professor at Michigan (1915–22), where he made vital and practical contributions to the improved use of land in Michigan State. He then became professor of geography at the University of California, Berkeley (1923–54), researching the historical geography of Latin America and the relationships between human societies and plants. |
