| German trade unionist, born in Marienburg, E Germany. A lathe-turner by trade, he became a union leader (1890) and was co-founder and chairman of the Generalkommission der Gewerkschaften Deutschlands (until 1919). He was also co-founder (1919) and chairman of the ADGB (Allgemeiner Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund) and first introduced co-operation between trade unions and employers. He led the successful general strike against the Kapp-Putsch. |
