| biography:
| Writer, born in Stockholm, Sweden. He had a bizarrely chequered career as a clergyman and teacher; he was accused of forgery and attempted murder, and fled to the USA. From 1865 he lived in Bremen under an assumed name. His prolific literary output, ranging from Romanticism to (from the late 1830s) Social Realism, encompassed novels, plays, poems, and essays, and was published in a 14-volume series, Törnrosens bok (1832–51, The Book of the Briar Rose). |
