| Physiologist, born in Witzenhausen, C Germany. Professor at Leipzig (1865–95), he did pioneer research on glandular secretions, and his invention of the mercurial blood-gas pump revealed the role of oxygen and other gases in the bloodstream. He also invented the kymograph (1847) for recording changes in blood pressure, and was the first to keep animal organs alive in vitro (1856). |
