| Chemist, born in Cologne, W Germany, the brother-in-law of Fritz Haber. He became president of I G Farbenindustrie in 1925. He shared the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1931 for his part in the invention and development of chemical high-pressure methods, notably the Haber–Bosch process, by which hydrogen is obtained from water gas and superheated steam. |
