| Organic chemist, born in Goldschmieden, Germany (now Poland). He researched into coal hydrogenation for the production of motor fuels under high pressure, and the hydrolysis of wood to sugar, for which he shared the 1931 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. After World War 2 he left Germany for Argentina. |
