| biography:
| Roman Catholic clergyman, born in Seville, SW Spain, of Irish parents. He was brought up at Waterford, Ireland, entered the English College at Rome, was ordained in 1825, and became rector of the College in 1828. He was made bishop, and appointed president of Oscott College, Birmingham (1840) and vicar apostolic of London district (1847–50). His appointment as the first Archbishop of Westminster and a cardinal (1850) called forth a storm of religious excitement, which led to the passing of the Ecclesiastical Titles Assumption Act. One of his best-known works was a historical novel, Fabiola (1854). |
