| biography:
| Roman Catholic archbishop, born at Stourton Castle, Staffordshire, C England, UK. He studied at Oxford and Padua, received several Church posts, and was at first high in Henry VIII's favour; but after opposing the king on divorce, he left for Italy, and lost all his preferments. In 1536 the pope made him a cardinal, and he served on a commission that looked at abuses within the Church, recommending reforms in Consilium de emendanda ecclesia (1537, Plan for Church Reform). In 1554, in the reign of Mary I, he returned to England as papal legate. He became one of her most powerful advisers, returned the country to Rome, and became Archbishop of Canterbury. |
