| biography:
| Roman Catholic cardinal, born in Reading, SE England, UK. He trained at the English College in Rome, was ordained (1956), and worked in Portsmouth and Southampton before his appointment to the English College as rector (1971–7). In 1977 he became Bishop of Arundel and Brighton and later succeeded Cardinal Basil Hume as Archbishop of Westminster (2000). He was made a cardinal in 2001. |
