| biography:
| Roman Catholic Benedictine monk and cardinal. He studied at Ampleforth, Oxford, and Freibourg, and was ordained in 1950. He became Magister Scholarum of the English Benedictine Congregation (1957–63), and in 1963 Abbot of Ampleforth, where he remained until created Archbishop of Westminster and a cardinal in 1976. He was the first Catholic bishop to be appointed to the Order of Merit, in 1999. His books include Searching for God (1977), Towards a Civilisation of Love (1988), Remaking Europe: The Gospel in a Divided Continent (1994), and Basil in Blunderland (1997). |
