| Roman Catholic clergyman, born in Carlton, North Yorkshire, N England, UK. He studied at the English College, Rome, where he became rector (1917–28) after various posts in England. He was appointed Archbishop of Westminster from 1935, and made a cardinal in 1937. Outspoken in his opposition to the Fascist powers in Germany and Italy, he founded in 1940 an ecumenical politico-religious group called the Sword of the Spirit to rally British churchmen against totalitarianism. |
