| Writer of boys' stories, born in Ballyroney, Co Down, SE Northern Ireland, UK. He was intended for the Presbyterian ministry but, at the age of 19, went to America, where he spent several adventurous years, becoming a captain in the Mexican War. After his return to Europe in 1849, he settled in England and drew on his American experiences in his popular novels for boys, notably The Rifle Rangers, or, Adventures in Southern Mexico (1850), The Maroon (1862), The Headless Horseman (1866), and The Castaways (1870). |
