| biography:
| Strip cartoonist, born in New Haven, Connecticut, USA. He studied at Designers Art School, Boston (1929), and entered strips as assistant to Bud Fisher on Mutt and Jeff (1930). Joining Associated Press, he took on a daily joke, Mr Gilfeather (1932), then became assistant to Ham Fisher on Joe Palooka (1933), introducing hill-billy characters, and developed L'il Abner (1934). Capp's chunky artwork coupled with hilarious hill-billy dialogue soon made the strip a success, inspiring two films, a stage musical, and an animated series. |
