| Portuguese explorer. In 1482 he discovered the mouth of the Congo, near whose bank an inscribed stone erected by him as a memorial was found in 1887. His voyages southwards along the West African coast later enabled Bartholomew Diaz to find the sea route to the Indian Ocean around the Cape. |
