| biography:
| King of the Medes and Persians, who succeeded his father, Cyrus II, in 529 BC. He put his brother Smerdis to death, and in 527 or 525 BC invaded and conquered Egypt. When news came, in 522 BC, that Gaumáta, a Magian, had assumed Smerdis's character, and usurped the Persian throne, Cambyses marched against him from Egypt, but died in Syria. |
