| biography:
| Athenian orator and statesman, whose eloquence is said to have fired the imagination of the youthful Demosthenes. In 366 BC he allowed the Thebans to occupy Oropus, and was prosecuted, but defended himself successfully in a brilliant speech. He was prosecuted again in 361 for his Spartan sympathies and was condemned to death, but went into exile before sentence was pronounced. He returned from exile in Macedonia, hoping to win public support, but was executed. |
