| biography:
| The first English poet of known name, to whom the Song of Caedmon is attributed. Bede reports that, unlearned till mature in years, Caedmon became aware in a semi-miraculous way that he was called to exercise the gift of religious poetry. The name Caedmon cannot be explained in English, and has been conjectured to be Celtic. He became a monk at Whitby, N Yorkshire, and spent the rest of his life composing poems on the Bible histories and on religious subjects. The Song influenced much later Anglo-Saxon poetry. |
