| biography:
| Pagan king of Gwynedd, NW Wales (from c.625). With Penda, the Mercian king, he invaded the Christian kingdom of Northumbria in 633 and slew King Edwin (Eadwine) at the Battle of Heathfield (Hatfield Chase), near Doncaster. He ravaged the kingdom, according to the Venerable Bede, but was himself defeated and killed by King Oswald at the Battle of Heavenfield near Hexham. |
