name: Wheeler, Burton K(endall)

sex: male
lived: (1882–1975)

biography: US senator, born in Hudson, Massachusetts, USA. After taking a law degree from the University of Michigan (1905), he began to practise law in Butte, MT (1906–11), and was federal district attorney for Montana (1913–18). Elected to the US Senate (Democrat, Montana, 1934–47), he was an outspoken progressive in the 1920s and helped expose the scandals of the Harding administration. He grew more conservative in the 1930s, leading the fight against President Franklin Roosevelt's ‘court packing’ plan in 1937 and against American intervention in World War 2. After losing the election of 1946, he returned to private law practice in Montana.
