| Writer and diarist, born in King's Lynn, Norfolk, E England, UK. She educated herself by reading English and French literature and observing the distinguished people who visited her father. Her first and best novel, Evelina, was published anonymously in 1778, and influenced Jane Austen. She was given a court appointment in 1786, but her health declined; she retired on a pension and married a French emigré, General d'Arblay, in 1793. Her Letters and Diaries (1846) show her skill in reporting events of her time. |
