| biography:
| Maori scholar and writer, born in Urenui, New Zealand. He practised medicine, was an MP (1909–14), served in World War 1, then became an anthropologist. In 1927 he joined the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, Hawaii, and was director there from 1936 until his death. He was knighted in 1946. |
